Hit Songs of the '70s ranged from Flower Power to Disco Nights
The Beatles split but remained #1 with "Let It Be" and "The Long and Winding Road." Motown scored big with Simon & Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, The Jackson 5, and Sly & The Family Stone. BB King gave us "The Thrill Is Gone" and James Taylor "Fire and Rain."
1971 saw a mood shift with Freda Payne's "Bring the Boys Home,” Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me,” Rod Stewart's "Maggie May," and John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Road."
Romantic love in 1972 scored for Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” Don McClean mourned "the day the music died with “American Pie” and Sammy Davis, Jr. had a big hit with "Candy Man."
In 1973, success of "Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree" and "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" demonstrated creativity had run dry, but pop had moments of genius with Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," and hits by the Allman Brothers, Elton John, and David Bowie.
Barbara Streisand and John Denver had a big 1974, and Cat Stevens proved staying power. Paul McCartney scored with Wings, "Band on the Run." The Jackson 5 and Kool & The Gang introduced '70s funk, a genre that would reach a high point with 1979's "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire.
With the end of the Viet Nam War in 1975 the pop responded by getting really light. Captain & Tennille and "Kung Fu Fighting" were massive hits. Frankie Valli and Neil Sedaka, teen from the early '60s, enjoyed a comeback. "Get Dancin'" was a minor hit for Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes, pointing to the next wave…
In 1976, Disco offered a solution to the previous low mood with hits like "Disco Lady" by Johnnie Taylor and "Boogie Fever" by the Sylvers. Keeping things soporific were Seals & Crofts, Barry Manilow, Hall & Oates, and brilliance with Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Electric Light Orchestra and Fleetwood Mac.
1977 was OK with "Dancing Queen" and Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke." Overall, mild-mannered '70s rock emerged, defined by Aerosmith, Heart, Kansas, and the Eagles and Elvis Presley had a minor hit with "Way Down" before passing away August 16.
Disco was big in 1978, and the Bee Gees (once a groovy '60s rock band) became disco royalty. Debbie Boone, had a mega-smash "You Light Up My Life", and the year's high points included good work from the Rolling Stones, with "Miss You," and the pop genius of Steely Dan.
